 This is an email I have sent out and about the Great Dane community. I do hope you all will join and tell Petsmart just how much their decision hurts our breed. Therefor, we will hurt their bottom line!!! Please feel free to copy and paste any part of this page to blogs, web sites, emails, etc!

It has recently come to my attention that Petsmart will no longer carry Purina's Pro Plan Giant Breed Formula. They say they do not sell enough of it keep it on the shelves of their stores! They are more concerned about their bottom line then the health and welfare of our Giant Breed Dogs and puppies!
 
I am a member of Purina's weight circle redemption program with the Great Dane Club of America designated to receiving my points. These points this year helped the GDCA reach it's goal of 103%, with Purina donating money/grants for the genetic research of the Great Dane! These research donations help with the expenses of research on the genetic diseases in our breed. Without this money, I am sure, a lot of the research being done today, to help with common issues in the Great Dane would have no funding. Therefor, there would be no research to find out the causes genetic diseases/disorders and then ultimately find a cure! My last years total of weight circles that I had sent into the program, totals well over 40,000! (Yieks, I can't believe I use that much food!) All of the food that carried these points/weight circles, I purchased at Petsmart.
 
Petsmart does not seem to understand how "tricky" it can be to feed a Giant Breed Dog. Their answer to me, when I asked why they are no longer carrying it and where can I purchase the Giant Breed Formula,  was "just switch your food to Large Breed!" As all Dane owners know, that when you find a food that your dogs have loved and puppies have no "growth" problems or issues, you are feeding them something right! (My oldest Dane lived until he was 13, and he ate Pro Plan his entire life!) That you "just" do not switch a food because some corporate idiot doesn't understand that Giant Breed does not mean Large Breed, or the growth problems/issues that may be involved with feeding a Great Dane too much protein!
 
I am asking everyone, weather you own a Dane or not, to send Petsmart a message that their corporate decision, to push our Giant Breeds out of their stores, will not go quietly! That their decision HURTS our breed. I am sure without the food in the store other people will switch their dog's food to another brand, therefor less weight circles which means less research dollars for our breed! Let's tell Petsmart, until they put the Giant Breed Formulas back on their shelves...everything will stay on their shelves! Please DO NOT SHOP AT PETSMART UNTIL THEY PUT THE GIANT BREED FORMULAS BACK ON THEIR SHELVES AND INCLUDE OUR BREED IN THEIR STORE'S MOTO! (Petsmart- Smart pet products, services, & supplies for the healthier, happier pet. Hmmm, would our Danes be healthier & happier...I surely don't think so!)
 
I am also asking that you please email this letter to every Giant Breed owner (or any pet owner for that matter) and PLEASE copy, paste, print out, sign and mail the letter below to Petsmart's Corporate Office (19601 N. 27th Ave Phoenix AZ 85027) or copy and paste it into the petsmart help desk and email it to them ( Help Desk - Petsmart.com ) :
 
 Dear Petsmart,
 
I am a Great Dane owner and a customer of Petsmart. I purchase my dog food and all the "extras" my dog(s) need from Petsmart.   As you may or may not know feeding a Giant Breed dog is quite "tricky". You MUST pay attention to the protein intake as so the dog will not build muscle mass too quickly and develop bone/joint problems. Also the kibble size plays an important role as well, the smaller the kibble size, the more food the Giant breed dog/puppy needs to eat to meet it's daily food intake requirements and the more food the stomach needs to process the greater risk of the dog/puppy bloating (Gastric Dilatation Volvulus)! This is a great risk to all Danes (and several other breeds too). The reason for this letter is to simply ask that you reconsider taking the Pro Plan Giant Breed Formulas off the shelves of Petsmart. It will put my Great Danes as well as other Giant Breeds at great risk! Not to mention if the food is not in the store people cannot purchase it and send in the weight circle to help with the research of genetic disorders in the Great Dane and other giant breeds. Therefor, every Great Dane loses by your decision not to carry the Pro Plan Giant Breed Formulas.  If you decide to not carry Pro Plan Giant Breed Formulas, I will have to take my business elsewhere and not return to your store until the Giant Breed Formula is put back on your shelves. I am asking that you reconsider and put the health and welfare of all Giant Breeds to a priority and not a bottom line! After all your moto is "Petsmart-Smart pet products, services, & supplies for the healthier, happier pet!"  Thank You for hopefully reconsidering!

Here's my letter to Petsmart's Help desk

 
I am a Great Dane Breeder and a long time customer of Petsmart. I purchase all of my dog food from Petsmart. On average I spend close to $400.00 a month on Pro Plan Giant Breed Adult and Puppy Food (This is just in food alone, and does not include all the "extras" I pick up while I'm in the store! You can Call store #1103 and ask them just how much money a month I spend in that store!). I have been feeding my Danes this food for years.
